Work and Holiday visa (462) for US citizens in 2026

What the 462 looks like for US passport holders in 2026: age 18 to 30, the education requirement, functional English via the passport, no first-visa cap for Americans, and the 88-day and 179-day specified-work framework for repeat years.

Pathway

The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) is the working holiday route for US passport holders. It gives you 12 months in Australia, short-term work rights, and up to 4 months of study. The age range is 18 to 30 inclusive, and you must apply before turning 31, using the Australian Eastern time deadline Home Affairs describes (Department of Home Affairs, accessed 2026-07-01).

Who qualifies

  • Aged 18 to 30 inclusive at the time of application.
  • A US passport. Holding it also satisfies the functional English requirement.
  • A Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or equivalent: a US high school diploma, or any higher qualification.
  • Evidence of about A$5,000 in funds, plus a fare onward or home.
  • No previous entry to Australia on a 462 or a 417, and no accompanying dependent children.
  • The usual health, character, debt and Australian-values requirements.

Two things Americans specifically do not need: a government letter of support (the support-letter list on the first 462 page does not include the United States), and a slot under an annual cap, because first-462 country caps apply to eligible countries except the United States (Department of Home Affairs, accessed 2026-07-01).

On the fee: Home Affairs publishes the current 462 charge inside the application system, and there is no stable figure on the public page for us to monitor, so we do not quote one. Check the first Work and Holiday page for the current fee before you lodge.

Second and third years

Repeat years are earned with specified subclass 462 work. A second 462 requires three months, defined as at least 88 calendar days; a third requires six months, defined as at least 179 calendar days (Department of Home Affairs, accessed 2026-07-01). The days can include weekends during employment, and the work can be accumulated across employers, but it must be paid according to Australian law and it must be in the 462's own approved industries and areas, which are not identical to the 417 lists. Second and third 462 visas are not subject to the first-visa country caps.

The six-month employer limit

Work and Holiday makers are generally subject to condition 8547, the six-month limitation with any one employer, unless an exemption or written permission applies (Department of Home Affairs, accessed 2026-07-01).

Health cover

The United States has no reciprocal health care agreement with Australia (Services Australia, checked 2026-07-10), so a US passport or 462 does not create Medicare access. A different qualifying pre-arrival residence may change that position; otherwise price private cover for the full visa period and check that it covers the work you plan to do.

The next step

Take the US 462 quick check for a first-visa verdict against the published rules, including the education question, then build a profile if you want the document checklist: passport scan, education evidence, funds evidence, ImmiAccount setup and lodgement, in order.
