Points test

The scoring system that ranks applicants for points-tested skilled visas. You need at least 65 points, but competitive scores are usually well above that.

The points test is the scoring system used for points-tested skilled visas, including the Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190), and Skilled Work Regional (491). Points are awarded for factors such as age, English ability, skilled employment, qualifications, and a skilled partner.

The minimum to be eligible is 65 points, but in practice scores need to be much higher to receive an invitation. For many occupations a competitive score sits around 85 points or above, depending on demand.
