Second and third working holiday visa on a UK passport: no 88 days, no farm work

For many Working Holiday makers, a second visa includes a three-month specified-work test, and a third includes six months. UK passport holders are the exception. For 417 applications lodged on or after 1 July 2024 with a UK passport, no specified work is required for a second or third visa (Department of Home Affairs, accessed 2026-07-01). This guide is the fine print.

The rule

• Up to three separate 417 visas can be granted to a UK passport holder without meeting specified-work requirements.
• The arrangement applies to applications lodged on or after 1 July 2024 using a UK passport.
• The lifetime maximum remains three 417 visas, whichever eligible passport a dual national uses, not counting any nil-cost Working Holiday Maker visa held (for example a COVID-era replacement).
• You can lodge any 417 application until midnight Australian Eastern time (AEST or AEDT) on the day before your 36th birthday.
• The visas do not need to be consecutive. You can apply for a second or third 417 at any time while you meet the age requirement.

The dual-national wrinkle

The arrangements follow the passport used to apply, and Home Affairs addresses the crossover case directly: a UK citizen who previously entered Australia on a 417 using a different eligible passport, such as an Irish one, can still apply for a second or third 417 without specified work, provided the new application is lodged with the UK passport on or after 1 July 2024 (Department of Home Affairs, accessed 2026-07-01). The earlier visa still counts toward the three-visa lifetime maximum.

The reverse also matters. Lodge your repeat application with an Irish passport and the Irish rules apply: a three-month specified-work test for the second visa. Applying from inside or outside Australia

UK passport holders can lodge a second or third 417 in or outside Australia, and the location you declare decides the rest (Department of Home Affairs, checked 2026-09-29):

• If you apply in Australia, you must be in Australia when the visa is granted. You must hold a substantive visa, or your last substantive visa must have expired less than 28 days before you apply.
• Only an application made in Australia can come with a bridging visa. Apply from outside, then enter Australia on another visa before the decision, and no bridging visa is linked to the 417 application.
• If you apply outside Australia, you must be outside when it is granted, you must enter within 12 months of the grant, and the 12 months of stay start when you enter.
• If you are in Australia on your first 417 or its bridging visa, the second visa's 12 months run from the date the first 417 expired or would have expired.
• If you hold more than one passport, you must enter Australia on the passport linked to the visa grant.

Declare your location correctly on the form. Home Affairs says a wrong location has to be amended and may delay processing.

Fees, funds and processing

A second or third 417 costs A$1,000 in FY 2026-27, plus a non-internet charge if you lodge on paper (Department of Home Affairs visa pricing, checked 2026-09-29). Health checks, police certificates and biometrics can add to that if Home Affairs asks for them. The funds guidance is about A$5,000 plus your onward fare; Home Affairs says you do not need to provide funds evidence when you apply in Australia.

Home Affairs expects most Working Holiday Maker applications to take around 3 months on average, and says published times are a guide only (Department of Home Affairs, checked 2026-09-29). The Minister said on 17 September 2026 that UK applications will continue to be processed at the slower pace of recent years. Do not book flights or make work or study commitments until the visa is granted.

The 2026 ballot and UK passports

On 17 September 2026 the Minister announced a ballot for second and third Working Holiday years, capped at 45,000 and 5,000 places, with regional work as the entry test. He also said there is no regional requirement for the United Kingdom because the arrangement is part of the free trade agreement. No legislation or start date had been published when we checked on 2026-09-29, and the current UK rules above still apply. The ballot guide tracks what changes.

What this changes in practice

Everything about how you plan the year. Irish and Canadian backpackers structure their first year around finding qualifying regional work before their visa runs out; on a UK passport that pressure simply does not exist. You can stay in a city job for the full year (watching the six-month one-employer limit under condition 8547), then lodge the second application when you are ready.

It also changes what evidence you keep. There is no specified-work evidence to collect for a UK repeat year: no payslip trail for the 88 days, no postcode checks, no employer summary. Keep the ordinary things instead: passport validity, funds evidence, and a clean compliance record on your current visa.

What has not changed

• The age range is still 18 to 35 inclusive for each application.
• Each repeat application still carries a fee (A$1,000 in FY 2026-27) and the funds guidance of about A$5,000.
• Health, character and compliance requirements apply to every application.
• Condition 8547, the six-month limit with one employer, applies while you work in Australia.
