The partner visa charge rose on 1 July 2026. For most main applicants it is now A$11,710, whether you apply in Australia (subclass 820/801), outside Australia (subclass 309/100) or for a Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) (Department of Home Affairs visa pricing, checked 2026-09-29). The temporary and permanent partner visas are applied for together, and the Home Affairs price list shows one charge for the combined application.

Two more concessions apply. People who hold a Dependent Child visa (subclass 445) pay no charge when they apply for a partner visa. From 1 July 2026, eligible citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu pay a lower charge; the Home Affairs price list does not show that figure, so check the partner visa page. Irish, UK, US and Canadian passport holders pay the standard charge.

The Prospective Marriage route costs more in total
A Prospective Marriage visa (300) costs A$11,710. After you marry, the onshore partner visa (820/801) costs a reduced A$1,955 if you apply before the 300 ends. Together that is A$13,665 for the main applicant, against A$11,710 for a single partner visa application. Home Affairs notes that you pay less for the 820/801 only if you hold the 300, marry your prospective spouse, and apply before the 300 ends.
Costs the charge does not cover
Home Affairs says its pricing estimator does not include other costs relating to the visa. Budget separately for the ones that apply to you:
- Health examinations for each applicant, when Home Affairs asks for them.
- Police certificates from the countries Home Affairs asks about.
- Translations of non-English documents.
- Your own time and costs to gather relationship evidence and witness statements. The Form 888 guide covers the statements.
Paying, and whether it is refunded
You pay the charge when you lodge the application in ImmiAccount. Home Affairs says it will not refund the application fee if it refuses your application. Charges are reset each financial year, so check the Home Affairs price list on the day you lodge.
How long it takes
Home Affairs does not publish a fixed processing time for partner visas. It says processing times vary, that applicants may wait longer than expected, and points to its processing time guide for recently decided applications. Since 25 July 2026, family visas are processed under Ministerial Direction 117, which gives highest priority to applications made in Australia for a visa that can be granted in Australia. The partner visa changes guide explains the order.
