Definition

Migration agent

A person registered with the regulator to give migration advice in Australia. Paid advice from unregistered people is illegal, so always verify registration.

A registered migration agent (RMA) is a person registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) and authorised to give migration advice under the Migration Act 1958. Registration is what makes their paid advice lawful.

Giving immigration assistance for a fee in Australia without being registered is illegal. Australian solicitors who hold an unrestricted practising certificate may also lawfully give migration advice without separate MARA registration.
